Your Body, Drugs and Co.

For God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body

1 Corinthians 6:20

There is a painting that sends slivers of trouble down my chest and arms every time I see it. I stumbled upon it by accident in a press reception. Immediately, I had to find a thumbnail of it online[1]

If the picture you see below is not clear enough… there is a handsome, thickset, tattooed man kneeling before a table. Something like a bottle and glass of alcohol probably, an ashtray with the last cigarette still smoking, a silver tray with some white stuff on it, an ID, a candle, a spoon, a lighter, a gun, a cigarette lighter, and playing cards are all on the table. On the side is a white chair or shelf with a lampstand and a white skull on it.

Come to the man himself. He’s kneeling before the table. His hand seems outstretched to receive a hypodermic needle into it. His teeth are clenched around a small rope extending from his upper arm. Then I noticed another person leaning over his shoulder. It’s the other person who has grimaced with his eyes tightly shut that is actually receiving the needle.

Though the man thinks he is injecting himself, he is actually injecting the other person’s arm with the drug. With a start, I realize that this person must be Jesus! It looks very much like Him. The artist’s message should not be difficult to unravel. He seems to be saying all the pain, wounds, and sins we inflict on ourselves are also felt by He, who was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities. Even the chastisement of our peace was laid on Him, and with His stripes, we are healed.

Why would a person buy or rent a gorgeous suit/dress/cloth and drag it in the mud? Jesus created us, then because of sin, had to purchase us back with His own precious life-blood. That means we’re bought at a fabulous cost. So why would we destroy ourselves with killer lifestyles? Drugs, food, exercise, rest, entertainment, drink, and religion? I don’t understand. But I should understand, right? Keep in mind that anything that negatively affects our bodies and/or minds and makes us do things God’s children should not do must be removed. Reread our text above (1Co 6:20). It cost Someone His life to get you saved. So bring glory to God in the way you use your body (CEV). Here is more – 1Co 3:16 Don’t you know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him because God’s temple is holy. You are that holy temple! (GW).

Drugs that injure or alter your body and mind, like tramadol cannot be God’s will for you. Practices including tattooing (check https://biblereasons.com/tattoos/) and bleaching that defaces God’s creation-your body – cannot be God’s will for you. Good things, exercise and food included, carried to extremes are not God’s will. Watch out and be wise about what you do and ingest, where you go, who you are with and why. Be careful about the things you watch and listen to. Don’t foolishly follow others. Learn how to think. Ask if this steroid/drug taking, body piercing, complexion changing lifestyle will please God. Be wise. Human life is too short to waste.

  1. Thank you so much, Pastor. May God give us the strength to always remember to keep the body for the one who died to redeem us.

  2. The message is clear. The choices are either: 1. obedience and live with meaningful purpose; or 2. Disobedience and a meaningless existance.
