So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Side by side, just below the eyes, your ears stick out of your head. They provide our sense of hearing. And the Creator tilted them forward to facilitate a combined hearing range of almost a full 360˚. Each person’s hearing range depends mainly on the condition of the ears and the nervous system. Our ears often collaborate with our eyes as we go about daily routines (Imagine walking down a busy street blindfolded and alone). People with hearing problems such as tinnitus, which manifests by a whistling sound, will find it difficult to fit into specific occupations, e.g. firefighter, disc jockey, etc.

Clearly, our hearing is another critical way God can reach us. He gives His word of doctrine, reproof, correction, instruction in righteousness, guidance, prophecy, and blessing (2Timothy 3:16). Our text Rom 10:17 reads, ‘So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. The point is that our faith is built up as we hear God’s word. Good listeners become good teachers, parents, spouses, counsellors, children and great leaders. There is even a name for such a leader – democratic.

Information flows from the ear to the mind and the heart for rumination. Later, this information shows up in our actions, behaviour and character. God fulfils His promise through the ear in Hebrews 10: 16, 7, and that word springs up to eternal life and Christian living. Just as the driver’s attention is riveted on the road, God must have our 100% attention, or we are not worshipping Him. Some people even look at you as if they are listening, but they have tuned you out mentally, so they’ll still not hear. Others listen only to hear your first words and begin to formulate their answer. Either way, we cannot hear what is being said. For some people, social media has given them spiritual tinnitus – they WhatsApp while the sermon is going on! They are there present and in person. However, they can hardly hear what is said because they are not there in mind and heart.

So turn up your audio, my dear. Be attentive. Listen up to God. Through the Holy Spirit and His timeless word, He has something to say to you – about sin, righteousness, and judgment. About your lifestyle, relationships, influence on others, choices, music, soap operas and movies you watch; about how only wickedness, vengeance, and smartness make you laugh while truth and righteousness make you yawn…

Afterwards, listen around so you can glorify God through your decisions and actions.

    1. Yes. So we have to keep practicing how to tune in to Him and then rip off the knob. We have to keep practicing out our antenna of prayer until we begin to receive His inspiration. God bless you Innocence Alfred.

  3. Once has He spoken, twice have I heard. If faith cometh by hearing and hearing the word of God, that means God has spoken more than once. Therefore, even fear and doubt cometh by hearing and hearing the words of Satan. May God help us to hear His voice and to do His will always. For He only thinks of good and not of evil towards us.
